I’ve said it a thousand times and so this will be a familiar tone of article, but why has 3G not yet been embraced in the EFL?
It’s utterly farcical how you can play 45 minutes of football on a swamp before an abandonment but a technically perfect artificial surface is deemed inadequate.
Macclesfield’s late winner against Woking too, televised to the world, made lower league football something of a laughing stock after the player originally ran off to celebrate whilst the ball stuck in a puddle on the line.
The ball was eventually put in though, and that has to go down as a blow for us, now 6 point behind albeit with a game in hand.
One would assume Macclesfield will have little trouble overcoming Chester this coming Monday so realistically you’d probably think only a win against Bromley would keep U’s in the title race.
This is no easy task against one of the sides still chasing a playoff spot, and probably with confidence given their relatively kind run in.
The local derby factor will add a bit of edge to the game too, one that is likely to be watched by a large crowd.
Even if Macclesfield do not slip up and take the title home, there is now a significant advantage to finishing 2nd or 3rd in the league with the new playoff system so there’s motivation for U’s to continue at the top of their game right to the end this season, one which has no doubt been thrilling for everyone following the club.
